A New Approach to Preparing and Keeping Teachers
The Onboarding Series
Welcome! The Onboarding Series provides tools to fully prepare and retain highly qualified teachers working with students who have Emotional Disabilities. Teachers participating in this series will sharpen their skills, develop a network of support, and create a learning plan that takes their skills to the next level.

Perspectives From the Field
What Administrators Say About Onboarding
Teachers need:
-
the opportunity to building connections between new teachers;
-
connect new teachers to resources (technology, content, etc);
coaching/mentoring throughout; -
unpack federal/state/county mandates related to exclusion; suspension, and seclusion.
-
Teachers need to understand classroom management.
-
General educators have to know how to keep kids in their rooms and engaged. Students with ED get sent to the counselor or office too often.
-
We need the district to teach staff how to support students with ED if they are going to be successful in general education.
-
Teachers need support and know they are cared about.
Administrators shared:
-
I like the incorporation of special education law and crisis management through CPI
-
Multiple touchpoints through mentors, especially using veteran teachers is a good idea.
-
Two weeks of orientation is ideal but you may not get funding. Consider some of the days/week to be optional
-
School-based administrators shared:
-
I like that they are completing the development plan prior to the school year. I think this will help them take part in meaningful PD.
-
Two full weeks is more than any other content, could some be optional or virtual?
-
What's the incentive for veteran teachers to participate?
What Teachers Say About the Onboarding Series
Teachers shared:
-
I love the two weeks of orientation! I think it adds time to review and practice what we are learning.
-
The pace of the orientation will really help teachers with feeling comfortable in applying what they learn.
-
The teacher learning plan will be great to have done before school, it will really help with implementation.
-
I hope the school admin sees this training and take it too!
-
Content teachers may not have time to participate in the full two weeks, is there an option for them to participate in one week or a few days?
What Teachers Say They Need From Onboarding
Teachers say they need:
-
I would have liked to learn more about what works from veteran teachers
-
Classroom management that works best for students with an ED
-
Understand special education law
-
I want to know how to keep a student from escalating when they start to get upset.
-
I need to know the resources available; like where do I go for help in different situations.
-
I think more time in onboarding would be helpful. I participated in two mandatory days which felt very overwhelming.
-
There wasn't a lot of support after orientation. A specialist checked in every few weeks but I didn't really feel like I could reach out if I had questions
-
I think administrators should know what we are learning.
